Sheave on mobile dock crane

When we replaced the sheaves on a mobile dock crane, we found bearing damage and realised the cause was that the wrong tolerance had been used for the bearing seat. The bearing itself had broken as a result of the radial and axial forces.

Our solution? Rather than welding and boring out the bearing, we came up with a more efficient procedure:

  • The damaged bearing seat was machined out to a larger diameter
  • A steel tube was forced into the seat
  • The tube was then machined until the dimensions were exactly right
  • The side of the sheave and the tube were both smoothed until they met the strict specifications of the bearing manufacturer
The result: a perfectly repaired cable sheave which can now be used as a replacement part for our customer.
